If you had to pick a creature to be on your side, wouldn't it be the dragon?
Seriously, the mythical creature has the power to breathe fire and slay the enemy, then fly off gracefully.
That's why the year of the dragon, which starts today and continues through Feb. 9, 2013, is considered to be the most auspicious in the Lunar New Year.
Dragons are destined for success, says Madeline Hsu, director of the Center of Asian American Studies at the University of Texas-Austin.
"You'll find many world leaders are dragons. They are often risk takers and highly successful," she said.
Because dragons have stereotypical "masculine" traits, such as aggressiveness, dominance and ambition, Hsu said, there will likely be a surge in births during the dragon year.
"A lot of Chinese families will try to have a baby boy born in a dragon year. They want a successful child, a powerful boy."
And dragon girls?
More families are embracing dragon girls, Hsu said, "as the scope of women as leaders with careers has expanded."
In ancient Chinese culture, dragons were considered a symbol of power and represented by the Chinese emperor, Hsu said. Only he could wear a five-claw dragon, which was viewed as the most powerful.
Dragon-born celebs include Adele, Colin Farrell, Rihanna, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Russell Crowe, Salvadore Dalí and Sigmund Freud.
And dragons are a hot item, thanks in part to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Ralph Lauren showed embroidered and lace dragons on the fall runway. John Hardy designed his silver jewelry collection with a dragon theme.
Judith Leiber crafted a crystal dragon on a clutch. And Swatch emblazoned them on watches.
According to Laura and Theodora Lau, co-authors of the best-selling The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes (HarperCollins, $18.99), all five of the Chinese dragons - wood, fire, earth, metal and water - tend to magnify both success and failure. (For each zodiac sign, there are five elements or types).
With 2012 as the year of the "water" dragon, dragons will experience the Chinese blessings of harmony, virtue, riches, fulfillment and longevity.
Whether you believe in zodiac predictions or not, the Lunar New Year is a celebration, said Chris Lavaccari, director of Education and Chinese Language Initiatives at Asia Society in New York.
"Sometimes Western culture tends to exoticize this celebration, but it's a time for family, food and vacation," he said.
"The Lunar New Year is much like the celebration of Jan. 1.
"It's one of the most significant holidays in Asian culture. "
