Marketing with QR Codes Surely you've noticed a QR code in a magazine, flyer, or at a trade show? QR codes are typically a square box that resembles a barcode that is designed to be scanned by a mobile device in order to reveal a web link or marketing message. Generating a QR Code for your business is a very easy process. There are several free websites that will help you generate a free QR code, such as www.quikqr.com . Here are a few helpful tips to ensure a successful QR campaign: Determine a goal for your QR campaign. Why do you want people to scan your code? To sign up for something? Download a free sample? Since QR codes are downloaded via a cell phone or mobile device, ensure your QR code directs to a mobile website. Start with compelling content. Just because you can create a QR code in seconds doesn't mean your message is ready to be revealed. Guide your users. The majority of mobile users are not familiar with QR codes or how to scan them. Offer a brief explanation of what the code is and how to access it. Remember that URL length is important. The longer the URL, the more complex the QR code image. A shorter link can mean a less detailed code, which is also a better option when scanned quickly or with a poor quality camera phone. Consider adding a QR code to the "contact us" section of your website so users can easily download your contact information. Use QR codes as a fun and easy way to direct the users to additional information, such as offering a link to an instructional video. Think about where your QR code will appear, and consider the time it takes to scan the code. For example, codes are much more successful when printed on a business card or postcard than the side of a bus. Offer a QR code on a brief one-page product slick, door hanger, or other small marketing piece that can offer additional information to those who are interested. Use QR codes as a unique way to get additional information, such as on Home for Sale signs – you could include a code that links to a video or photo tour of the house. Next time you attach a Word document to an email, you may want to think twice. Word documents are often one of the most frustrating file formats people commonly send. Here are a few reasons why Word documents are an unreliable way to email information:

• Not everyone has the same version of Word. If the recipient has an older version of Word than you do, they may not be able to open your document. Formatting issues are also common if files need to be converted to a newer version of Word.
• Your content is easily editable. Depending on the purpose of the document it can compromise security.
• Word documents don't always print the same way as they look on the computer.
• Fonts are not transferred with files, so if the recipient doesn't have the same font installed, another font will be substituted.
• Layouts can easily change due to poor formatting control over line breaks, page breaks, font substitutions, margins, etc.
• The file size of Word documents is very large and inefficient compared to other file formats.
• Word files are notorious for containing computer viruses.
• Images may lose quality when imported into Word. Also, Word typically does not handle graphics in the .eps format very well and makes it difficult to view them within a document.

The best alternative to sending Word documents is to save document as a PDF to preserve the formatting and look of the fonts you selected. Acrobat Reader is free and can be used by anyone to view the PDF file. Other alternatives include converting the file to HTML, or saving as plain text if formatting isn't an issue, or if formatting will ultimately be addressed through the use of page layout software.

1. Create a word or phrase of text.
   
   
   
   
2. Use the rectangle tool to create a rectangle about the size of your text. Apply a gradient fill to this rectangle.
   
   
   
   
3. Drag your type on top of the filled rectangle, making sure that the text is on top. (Object > Arrange > Bring to Front)
   
   
   
   
4. Select both pieces, the type and the rectangle.
   
   
5. Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
   
   
6. Click anywhere outside your type to see the effect.
