Marketing Your Small Business at Summer Events

Community festivals, movies in the park, farmers markets, athletic events – summer provides a host of opportunities to get out in the community and market your small business.

But renting booth space is just the beginning. You’ll need a plan for attracting passers-by and getting them interested in what you have to offer. If you’re planning to attend events this summer, here are some do’s and don’ts to get you off on the right foot.

  • DO email your VIP clients or customers beforehand. Invite them to stop by your booth, and ask them to help spread the word. If you have a Facebook page, you can also set up Events so your fans can see where you’ll be.
  • DON’T let your booth go bare. Catch the eyes of passers-by with banners and signs that promote your business and the products/services you offer.
  • DO have something to draw people into your booth, whether it’s a prize drawing, sample giveaways or product demonstrations. If it’s going to be a hot day, free water is always a good bet!
  • DON’T let people get away without collecting some kind of contact information. Collect business cards for your prize drawing, or use a QR code to encourage people to sign up for your mailing list.
  • DO have something to send them away with – a business card, flyer or a fun promotional item with your business name on it.
  • DO be ready to give a quick “elevator speech” about what your business does and how you can help. Remember that you don’t have long with each person, so you need to make an impression quickly.

And most importantly, have fun! Exhibiting at summer events is about showing community spirit and meeting your neighbors, not just a way to sell your product or services.
