Shipping Tobacco

As of June 29, 2010, pursuant to section 601.11 of the Domestic Mail Manual, it will be illegal to ship cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and all other tobacco products (with the exception of cigars) through third-party shippers (UPS, FedEx, DHL).

The U.S. Postal Service will still allow some shipments of tobacco products after June 29, but new rules will apply: 

  • All packages containing tobacco products must be taken directly to a USPS counter and surrendered to a USPS employee.
  • Tobacco products can be sent as gifts between adults of legal age, but gift packages cannot exceed 10 oz., and no more than 10 gifts can be shipped by an individual in a calendar month.
  • All tobacco products must be sent via Express Mail service.
