Business Cards

Welcome to Snuffles' Corner.....Did you ever wonder where business cards originated?  Did you know they have been around for over 600 years? Maybe longer than that but no one can remember that far back!

Word has it that they may have originated in China sometime in the 15th century but they didn't appear in the western world for another 200 years. They started life as visiting cards or calling cards, and were used to introduce a visitor or caller to announce their arrival, usually delivered by their footman (what is a footman anyway?) who would hand the card to the servant of the person they were calling upon. They were were over the top decorated with elaborate designs and lots of fancy writing that indicated the visitors social status and were treated with great respect and had extremely strict rules of care of the card by both the giver and receiver. Talk about status symbols! There was even an entire set of rules and socital etiquette associated with just how, when, where, etc that cards could be used and given out.

One of the most important rules of the time was the turning down of the corner of the card, each corner had a special significance associated with it.

Upper right hand corner - indicated a personal visit vs being the card being sent ahead by a servant
Upper left hand corner - meant the visit was intended to offer congratulations
Lower left hand corner - was to offer condolences
Lower right hand corner - Going away for a long trip
Now heres the confusing one, if there were more than two 'ladies' in the home, a gentleman would turn down one of the upper corners of the card to indicate the card was meant for the entire family.

They became a tool of the merchant trade in London but it was called a trade card. It was basically an advertisement card that had both pictures and the name of the company on the front and directions to the merchants establishment on the other side. In those days without Google maps, Facebook, Yelp or any other method of knowing where the merchant was located, having that information on the 'card' was crucial to getting prospective customers to their locations.

Over time the two cards became one and the same, albeit smaller, but the same none the less, can you imagine handing out a postcard size card to someone, not to mention where would you put it. In todays world, while we don't have all the rules and little nuances associated with business cards that would earn you banishment from polite society, there are some things that people should keep in mind when designing their business cards.

Use a large readable font - the most recommended font is something that makes it easier on the eye to read you want the eye to automatically and easily across the letters and words. Avoid thin script type fonts as these make it harder to read and you want to make it easy for both young and older eyes to read.

Use both - an email address and a website link. In todays world not having either is just not done, if you don't have a website to promote your business, it's definitely time to get one. Since most people do business online in one form or another, having an email address and a website just makes it easier in todays point and click world. Come to think of it, a QR code would be truly point and click.

Keep it simple - Don't use more than one font type or several different font sizes. Not only does it make the card too busy, it also makes it difficult to read. If the card can't be easily read it will most likely get shoved in a pocket or left 'by accident' on a table or worse yet, in a trash bin.

Everyone doesn't need your card - There is nothing wrong with being selective about who you give your business card to, which doesn't mean hoard your cards, it just means don't give your cards out unless 1. they are asked for, or 2. they will actually be used by the person you are giving it to or the business you are leaving it with.

Don't go for the 'free' or 'cheap' cards - Let's face it, human nature compels most of us to go for the lowest price when it comes to purchases in todays economy, but this is one area of your business that can really come back to bite you. Remember, the business card is an extention of your business, of your image. It reflects how others see you and a flimsy or cheap card says 'I didn't want to spend alot of money to show you how great my business is'. It's the image of your business that's being handed to another and you want them to remember and ultimately do business with you. A card that has 'free' or the name of the company that printed it stamped across the back of the card is probably not a great idea either.

Next week - Snuffles discusses the traditions associated with business cards, so stay tuned!!

Remember PostNet can assist you with making you look good to your clients with a quality business card. They are priced right and only printed on 14pt or 16pt stock which can be coated or uncoated, spot coated to add extra pizazz, have metallic coating, and even be 4D. QR Codes

As you can see from the examples to the left, QR codes are incredibly versatile and are only limited by your imagination. QR codes can encode a static URL or can also be dynamic in nature. QR codes can embed PURL (Personal URL) technology in a cross media direct marketing campaign so that response can be measured in a very detailed way.

If you don't think that QR codes warrant your attention...just take a look around the world today, there is literally a WAVE of "viral marketing" using QR codes going on everywhere. Billboards, neon signage, magazines, books, even your utility bills and tax forms now come with them!  In fact, some companies have gotten extremely creative with their use of the QR codes as a marketing tool with some very clever integration of them into logos and other pictures that depict their particular type of business.

So exactly what are QR or Quick Response codes?   QR Codes enable print media and web mobile media to work together. Using any smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, Droid etc.) enabled with a QR Reader app (free software that can be downloaded) you can scan a picture of the QR code and it will launch your smartphone's browser and take you to whatever URL is embedded within the code.

QR codes were invented in 1994 by the Japanese corporation Denso Wave. Originally designed to track parts in vehicle production they have now become an open source ISO standard free for the world to use. Because of its 2 dimensional design it is capable of encoding up to 7,089 characters. This is far more data than a typical one dimensional bar code such as the standard UPC symbol. A QR code can therefore encode any web address no matter the length of the URL.

In addition to the examples above we have listed below just a few of the ways that QR codes can be used in your print media:

** A Realtor can place a QR code on the printed information sheet outside or directly on the signage of a home for sale. A prospective buyer can snap a picture of the QR code which contains a URL taking the user to a YouTube video featuring a virtual tour of the home.

** At a scientific conference poster session, a scientist could place a QR code on their poster containing a URL leading directly to a PDF of the poster so as colleagues reviewed the poster's content they could also save a PDF to their phone and email it to colleagues not in attendance.

** A retailer can send out postcards in a direct marketing campaign that would include a QR code containing a URL to an interior page on their site containing a discount or a promotion only available via the QR code. This would drive mobile customers to the promotion with the additional benefit of allowing measurement of the effectiveness of the postcard campaign.

** An equipment manufacturer could use QR codes in their instruction manuals that would have direct links to their website or YouTube highlighting "how to" videos complementing the information in the manual.

At the Design and PrintCenter of PostNet Dunwoody & Alpharetta, we have many innovative and cost effective ways to incorporate QR codes into your print projects. If you are interested, just call or come in and let us help you see what QR codes can do to JUMP START your marketing campaign.
